Traces can have a constant colour - either a standard core colours or a user-defined colour.
However
requires some explanation:
If you have previously performed some sort of data-bearing plot that has generated values at nodes then colours will draw traces bearing those colours at the selected entities. This allows you to show how values have changed over time.
For example the image below uses mode to display colours showing X displacement on the example above. Here the traces have been added to a shaded image contour plot, but they would still be coloured if added to a non-data-bearing plot.
The image below shows another example using mode to display Translational Energy for airbag particles.
